2min previewYour Digital Footprint: What You Leave Behind
đ Transcript
About nine out of ten pieces of data about you are collected when youâre not actively doing anything online. You post one photo, like one comment, check one mapâand in the background, dozens of quiet data trails spin off, building a version of âyouâ you never actually met.
That hidden version of you doesnât just sit in a databaseâit gets *used*. Companies score you, sort you, and sometimes silently judge you based on patterns youâve never seen. Miss a few loan offers you never knew existed? Maybe an algorithm decided youâre ânot ideal.â Get strangely high insurance quotes? That could be your online behavior whispering into a risk model.
Your footprint also travels. Data brokers collect fragments from stores, apps, and websites, then bundle and resell them in huge markets you canât log into. Those bundles can hint at your politics, health worries, income level, even relationship status. And they donât stay in advertising: similar profiling tools are creeping into hiring systems, fraud checks, and âtrust scoresâ that shape which doors quietly openâor closeâfor you.
