The system predicts which ones will keep you scrolling, then reshuffles the deck in milliseconds as you pause, like, or rewatch. Over time, this doesn’t just react to you; it reshapes what you see, how long you stay, and even what feels “normal” online.

At first, you might see straight reporting; within minutes, hot takes, memes, and unverified “insider” threads start climbing. What changed? Not the event itself, but which posts are getting the fastest, strongest reactions from people wired a bit like you.
One way to picture this: like a stock market where each post’s “price” rises or falls based on micro-reactions—likes, rewatches, angry comments—coming in from millions of parallel timelines. Volatile “stocks” (posts that spike reactions) get bought up by the system and shown more; stable but slow-burning items rarely make the front page.
This is why two friends following the same accounts can still inhabit very different feeds during an election or public controversy. Tiny differences in what they pause on or expand compound into diverging worlds—one tilted toward outrage threads and partisan clips, another toward explainer videos or human-interest angles.

Try this experiment: For the next 48 hours, move all social apps off your home screen and set a 10-minute timer every time you open a feed (Instagram, TikTok, X, etc.). Each time the timer goes off, stop immediately and jot a quick “snapshot” in your notes app: which app you were on, why you opened it (boredom, habit, notification), and how you feel right now (energized, numb, FOMO, etc.). At the end of the 48 hours, scroll through your snapshots and look for patterns—when and why the feed hooks you most, and which app leaves you feeling worst. Then decide one concrete tweak based on your data (for example, “no TikTok after 10pm” or “Instagram only on desktop”) and run that as your next 48-hour experiment.
